The ECA Shareholders Meeting met in Barcelona to approve the final results of a highly successful Euroleague season that met all profit projections and to look forward to continued growth the next one. The shareholders also analyzed a summary of last season's sporting and fiscal success before making plans to enhance fan enjoyment and security in the future.
Shareholders discussed the financial situation of Union Olimpija Ljubljana of Slovenia, which currently has a documented outstanding debt with three players, and therefore failed to meet the competition's registration requirements. The club has been granted a deadline of July 20, 2012 to settle these and any outstanding debts, and a second deadline of September 20, 2012, whereby if the club continues to garner debt with players, it shall be excluded from the Turkish Airlines Euroleague competition for the season and replaced by the next team according to the 2012-13 Euroleague Country Ranking, which would be the 18th position: 2011-12 French finalist Le Mans Sarthe Basket.
Jordi Bertomeu, Euroleague CEO: "We are aware of the current difficult financial situation throughout Europe. Despite this, we believe that financial stability of the club is very important in this moment not only for the clubs itself but also for the Euroleague. We are elite group of 24 teams and we cant afford to take the risk that some of our clubs could end the season in the middle of the competition or wouldn't be competitive at all. These kinds of situations are bad for basketball itself, as they are lowering the attendances, financial stability of the competition and reputation. This is also against the financial rules which Euroleague confirmed during last season. Union Olimpija Ljubljana showed a lot of effort in the last days and convinced us with various facts in the last moment that they have serious plans to pay the current debt which they have to some former players. The club showed in the past what they can offer the fans in their Stoice arena, that's why we decided to give them conditional B-Licence which will be valid only if they meet the requirements by the end of the summer. If they do not meet the requirements their place in the Euroleague for 2012/2013 season will be given to other team. We strongly believe and hope that this will not be necessary."
Jani Moderndorfer , president of Union Olimpija Ljubljana: "Our situation is clear and reaction from the Euroleague is not a surprise to us. This elite basketball competition deserves clubs which are disciplined and stable on and off the court. During last days we reached an agreement with support of our sponsors that we continue Union Olimpija Ljubljana's Euroleague ambitions. The club committed to pay the debts in the shortest time possible. This is not new to us as this is our priority all along to pay back the money we owe to the former players, coaches and others. In case we do not meet our commitments we will not play in Euroleague. I believe that we will accomplish this, that's why we don't want to think about other possibilities."
